Katarina Juliet Ross, an American theater and film actress, was born on January 29, 1940, in Hollywood, California, USA. She grew up in a military family and later moved to Walnut Creek, just east of San Francisco. Ross received her education at Diablo Valley College and made her film debut in a student movie directed by Jim and Artie Mitchell.
Acting Career
Ross's most notable roles include Helen Robinson in the film "The Graduate" (opposite Dustin Hoffman) and Etta Place in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (with Paul Newman and Robert Redford). She has also authored several children's books. Ross began her professional acting career in 1966 when she appeared in an episode of the Western TV series "The Road West" on NBC. In 1971, she turned down the role of Bree Daniels in the film "Klute," which later earned Jane Fonda an Academy Award. However, Ross started filming the well-received TV movie "Murder by Natural Causes" in 1979, alongside acclaimed actors such as Hal Holbrook and Barry Bostwick. In the 1980s, she appeared in the series "The Colbys" and starred in films such as "The Final Countdown" (1980), "The Shadow Riders" (1982), "Conagher" (1991), and "Donnie Darko" (2001).
Personal Life
In 1969, Ross married Conrad Hall, a cinematographer who won three Academy Awards. They divorced in 1975. She is currently married to actor Sam Elliott, whom she met while filming "The Legacy" in 1978. Ross and Elliott have a daughter named Cleo Rose, who was born in 1948.
By 2008, Katarina Ross became the only actress to win a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress without being nominated in the same category for an Academy Award.
